International Symposium on Developing GH2 Ecosystem in India - Technology Solutions from Germany

The German Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers Association (VDMA) India along with their selected association members and the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF-SO) organised the 1st International Symposium on Developing Green Hydrogen Ecosystem in India - Technology Solutions from Germany on 29 August 2024 at The Lalit in New Delhi.

The one-day conference was organised in the backdrop of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) in 2023 to expand production capacities of green hydrogen to at least 5 Million Metric Ton by 2030 to meet export and domestic industry demands. The conference introduced German and European technology suppliers to the market, familiarised them with the opportunities in India, and connected European technology suppliers with potential local industry partners.

The inaugural session began with a welcome address from Mr. Rajesh Nath, Managing Director, VDMA India, who spoke about India being at the forefront of transition with its investment in fossil fuels, R&D, decarbonisation, and Indo-German cooperation for the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The Guest of Honour, Sebastian Borchmeyer, First Secretary - Economic and Global Affairs, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, New Delhi, graced the event with insights on bilateral trade, economy, import stabilisation and the importance of the mission for sectors such as heavy duty automotives and electrolysers. Honorable Chief Guest, Shri Ajay Yadav, Joint Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, in his opening remarks outlined the various initiatives being carried out by the Government of India in the green hydrogen sector. Mr. Clemens Antretter, Advisor, H2Uppp, Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF-SO), as the representative from the Knowledge Partner organisation, launched the Study on the Green Ammonia Supply Chain: Production, Storage and Export of Green Ammonia from India via seaborne transport and gave the audience an overview on the international green hydrogen market developments.

The technical sessions moderated by Mr. Sandip Roy, General Manager, VDMA India, featured a series of insightful and engaging presentations. The first technical session started with a presentation from Mr. Abhijeet Kulkarni, Baumer India, who discussed sensor solutions for green hydrogen. Mr. Kamel Bejaoui, Coatema Coating Machinery, followed with insights on the scale-up of production methods for fuel cells from Lab2Fab. Mr. Hirendra Chatterjee, Draeger Safety India presented on the topic of hydrogen safety - basics, hazards and detection matrix while Dr. Philipp Walter, Heraeus Precious Metals shared his views on platin group metals as indispensable elements for the hydrogen economy. Mr. Sharad Srivastava, Neuman & Esser India highlighted hydrogen as a key-enabler of energy transition. The session concluded with an engaging discussion and a networking lunch.

The second technical session began with a presentation by Mr. Frank Horlebein, Samson Controls, who discussed smart flow control for Power-to-X efficiency, followed by Mr. Shekhar Patil, Sulzer Pumps India who spoke about energy transition, and green hydrogen and hydraulic power recovery turbine. Mr. Amol Gaikwad and Mr. Tilak Somanna, Thyssenkrupp Nucera India presented the AWE technology for decarbonisation of the industry. The session was followed by a very interactive Q&A and a B2B Matchmaking session.

Attended by over 80 industry delegates, the event provided an overview of the latest technologies and practices in green hydrogen process, production, safety, and automation and facilitated insightful discussions among industry professionals.
