GIZ partners with RWE to study the Green Ammonia value chain in India

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) has formed a public-private partnership with RWE Supply & Trading to investigate and analyse the framework conditions for the sustainable production and export of green ammonia in India as part of a comprehensive study.

Under the International Hydrogen Ramp-Up Program (H2Uppp), the partners will investigate the viability and potential for the production, storage and subsequent export of green ammonia from India via seaborne transport along the entire value chain. Here is the "Study on the Green Ammonia Supply Chain: Production, Storage and Export of Green Ammonia from India via seaborne transport".

The study’s results, conducted over several months, will then be summarised in a report. This will contain an assessment of present framework conditions and possible constraints for green ammonia production and trading. This includes requirements for the certification of green ammonia and the investigation of export infrastructure for seaborne transport.

“This Public Private Partnership combines RWE’s technical expertise in international trading of energy commodities and our expertise in the renewable energy market of India as well as its stakeholder engagement. We aim to offer the results of this analysis as a basis for further project activities by the private sector” says Eva Meschede, GIZ. The H2Uppp program has been agreed between the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and the Indian Ministry for New and Renewable Energy to promote Indo-German Green Hydrogen projects and the international market upscale for green hydrogen. The ramp-up of green ammonia production in India with analysis of the potential for international exports and trading goes together with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and Germany’s National Hydrogen Strategy.

GIZ is a federal enterprise with a total of 25,000 employees in around 120 countries. For over 60 years, GIZ has been jointly working with partners in India for a sustainable economic, ecological, and social development. RWE Supply & Trading is the interface between RWE and the energy markets around the world. The trading entity also ensures the commercial optimisation of RWE’s power plant dispatch and markets electricity from RWE. Approximately 1,800 employees from over 70 different countries trade electricity, gas, commodities, and CO2 emission allowances.
