Webinar on GH2 Hubs Tool- Mapping India’s Production and Demand Clusters
The webinar “Unlocking Green Hydrogen Opportunities: Mapping India’s Production and Demand Clusters” was held on 11 March 2026. It brought together over 300 participants, including policymakers, industry experts, and stakeholders. The session focused on the launch of Version 2.0 of the Green Hydrogen Hubs Tool and how to navigate the platform.
The Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC), in collaboration with the International Hydrogen Ramp-up Program (H2Uppp), GH2 India, and the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF-SO), organised the webinar with the support of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
In her welcome address, Ms. Shivani Chaturvedi, Regional Director, IGCC, spoke about the opportunities in the green hydrogen sector to further strengthen long-standing Indo-German collaboration. She emphasised that identifying emerging production and demand centres is key to enabling efficient supply chains, guiding investments, and accelerating India’s green hydrogen market.
As part of the opening remarks, Mr. Georg Jahnsen, Project Lead, Green Hydrogen Projects, GIZ India, highlighted that one of the key questions stakeholders face today is where to make strategic investment decisions in the green hydrogen value chain. Identifying potential production hubs and industrial demand centres can unlock partnerships, support infrastructure development, and create long-term opportunities for both India and Germany.
The webinar also featured perspectives from government representatives. In the keynote address, Dr. Prasad Chaphekar, Director, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy highlighted the Ministry’s efforts in designating renewable energy hubs and discussed the challenges associated with hub development and infrastructure provisioning. He noted that identifying potential locations is the first step toward enabling hydrogen ecosystems and stressed the importance of tailoring state-level strategies based on domestic demand, export opportunities, and resource availability.
In his special address, Dr. Ranjith Krishna Pai, Senior Director, DST, emphasised the growing role of green hydrogen as a pillar of future energy systems and highlighted India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission as well as DST’s longstanding role in advancing hydrogen research and international collaboration.
Green Hydrogen Hub Tool
A key highlight of the webinar was the introduction of the Green Hydrogen Hub Tool, presented by Mr. Aniket Dasgupta, Director, PwC. Developed by GIZ in collaboration with PwC, the interactive digital tool visually identifies optimal locations for Green Hydrogen Hubs by mapping renewable energy nodes, industrial demand centres, and supporting infrastructure across the country.
Key Features of the Tool
The Green Hydrogen Hub Tool provides a range of features to help users explore India’s green hydrogen landscape:
- Mapping of industrial green hydrogen demand sectors including steel, refineries, fertilisers, chemicals, and glass
- Estimation of current and future green hydrogen demand up to FY2030
- Database of announced green hydrogen projects and relevant state policies
- Identification of potential green hydrogen hubs and Hydrogen Valley initiatives
- Mapping of export infrastructure, including ports and ammonia storage facilities
Interactive analytical dashboards to visualise hydrogen production and demand trends
Who Can Benefit from the Tool?
The Green Hydrogen Hub Tool can support a wide range of stakeholders across the hydrogen value chain:
- Project developers and investors seeking to identify promising markets and optimal project locations
- Industrial offtakers exploring nearby hydrogen supply opportunities
- Infrastructure developers planning logistics, storage, and transport solutions
- Policymakers and planners analysing hydrogen ecosystem development and cluster opportunities
- Research institutions and industry associations studying the growth of the hydrogen economy
We look forward to receiving feedback from users on this tool and how it can further support a shared vision for the development of India’s green hydrogen ecosystem. Such inputs will help shape future improvements and ensure the platform continues to provide relevant insights for planning, investment, and collaboration across the sector.
