Workshop on “Decarbonisation of India’s Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs) and Role of Green Hydrogen”

On behalf of the Standing Conference of Public Sector Enterprises (SCOPE), the Indo-German Support Project for Climate Action in India along with the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF-SO) organised a workshop on the “Decarbonisation of India’s Public Sector Enterprises and Role of Green Hydrogen” on 12 March 2024 at SCOPE Complex.

The workshop acquainted Indian Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs) with the concept and role of climate co-benefits in climate action, offering insights into the ongoing decarbonisation efforts in India. As part of the workshop, the study “Decarbonising India - Potential for Electrification across India’s Economy & Assessment of Electricity Needs”, conducted by PwC on behalf of IGEF-SO, was launched.

During the inaugural session, participants discussed recent policy and regulatory advancements aimed at expediting the manufacturing and adoption of green hydrogen. Mr. Ajay Yadav, Joint Secretary, Green Hydrogen, International Relations & Climate Change, of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), underscored the pivotal role of green hydrogen in India’s energy transition and outlined the governmental initiatives implemented since the inception of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission in 2022. He acknowledged the workshop's significance in showcasing the ongoing efforts and financing mechanisms, while facilitating connections between PSEs and MNRE. Mr. Sandeep Kumar Gupta, Chairman of SCOPE and Chief Managing Director of GAIL, echoed this sentiment, stressing PSEs' responsibility in driving green hydrogen demand domestically and the need for techno-commercial studies.

Ms. Ruchika Drall, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), discussed financial avenues like the Avana Sustainability Fund and highlighted the Leadership for Industry Transition (LeadIT) 2.0 initiative, encouraging PSEs to join and highlighted the role of Indo-German bilateral cooperation in creating opportunities for technology transfer and cross-industry learning.

Overall, the workshop posed a significant step towards climate action for PSEs, as it highlighted ongoing technologies and initiatives in green hydrogen and introduced an innovative low-carbon cement for decarbonisation, demonstrating visible decarbonisation efforts in India.
